Erect, branched cactus to 1.5 m, stems cylindrical, bluish green, spines whitish pale yellow; petals orange-scarlet when young, crimson when older, with yellow-orange bases, filaments and anthers cream. Small flies trapped in the interwoven stamen filaments the presumed pollinators. Common amongst cultivation (as a hedge) and on sand in pine plantation and in grass paramo.
