CASENT-CASENTOMOLOGY

Entomology (CAS)

The Academy's herpetology collection began in 1853 with a single Galápagos tortoise shell. It has since grown to be the 6th largest reptile and amphibian collection in the world and serves as a important repository of information for Academy scientists and others seeking to better understand these fascinating and important creatures. In addition to documenting species and their distribution around the world, our scientists and collaborators are at the forefront of many other aspects of herpetological research and conservation — examining the evolutionary relationships of various taxonomic groups, assessing and working to protect against population threats, and developing captive breeding programs and strategies to help maintain genetic stocks of critically endangered species.

LEPIDOPTERA

MO-TROPICOS

Missouri Botanical Garden

Plants are essential to sustaining the stability and quality of human life on this planet. At the Missouri Botanical Garden, we have dedicated ourselves to helping conserve biological diversity while there is still something left to protect. Our research provides scientific information essential to decision makers, from conservation and land use to social and environmental policy. We have taken the lead in making information widely accessible via the Internet, maintaining the world's largest botanical database and the premier botanical website, TROPICOS. Garden scientists conduct the most productive and geographically widespread botanical research program in the world. A tiny sample of its herbarium records are presented here; providing more will require funding.

VerNet-VariosReinos

Varios Reinos (VerNet)

VERTNET: DISTRIBUTED DATABASES WITH BACKBONE. VertNet is a NSF-funded collaborative project that makes biodiversity data free and available on the web. VertNet is a tool designed to help people discover, capture, and publish biodiversity data. It is also the core of a collaboration between hundreds of biocollections that contribute biodiversity data and work together to improve it. VertNet is an engine for training current and future professionals to use and build upon best practices in data quality, curation, research, and data publishing. Yet, VertNet is still the aggregate of all of the information that it mobilizes. To us, VertNet is all of these things and more.
